The Amazing Underwater Forest of Lake Kaindy

What makes Lake Kaindy truly remarkable is that it contains an underwater forest. Visible on the lakes surface are the tall, dried-out tops of submerged Spruce trees that rise above the water’s surface like the masts of sunken ships. They are the only sign of the amazing frozen forest below the water’s surface.

The water is so cold (even in summer the temperature does not exceed 6 degrees) that the pine needles remain on the trees, even after a hundred years of being submerged. During the winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular spot for ice diving.

The lake is 400 meters long and is located in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, about 129 km from the city of Almaty. The lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.

Kanaya’s lusus could have been a mother grub, though, but chose to adopt the role of a lusus instead. It’s entirely possible that there’s a reserve of virgin mothers crawling around the caves, and due to internal biological mechanisms only have one actively breeding at a time. Honeybees hives can have thousands of members with a single breeding queen, after all.

Culturally and politically Alternia probably always was doomed but the biology of it doesn’t seem incredibly unreasonable. Having a planet-bound means of reproduction isn’t a bad idea until you force all your mature members into space; millennia of evolution won’t change in a few thousand years

As for being planet-bound, I think it’s unreasonable that there’s only a single one for the whole planet to begin with…

My thought has always been that, originally, trolls would have had one mother grub per ‘tribe’. Then, when one group conquered another, they’d kill that groups mother grub - and get rid of her stored gene slurry. So the conquered trolls would have to use the victors mother grub and have a much lower chance of seeing their genes come up from the genetic lottery. As nations got bigger mother grubs got fewer until present Alternia - one Empress, one mother grub.

And yeah from a common sense point of view it makes perfect sense to have more than on mother grub. From a dystopian, Imperial, control freak point of view? Makes much more sense for the species to have only one means of reproduction which YOU absolutly control. Means any splinter group will last ust one generation before dieing out - and means you have complete control over the schooling every single young troll is fed. Looks like a pretty good deal from that point of view!

First piece of free style embroidery I’ve actually completed! And looking at it - there’s lots of rough edges and lesson for future: even if fretting about using up fabric still make sure there’s enough for the hoop it’s too frustrating otherwise. But I’m still really, really proud of it :)
